Making smart moves at RSSB
Hw do you shift traditional behaviours in an industry typically driven by following rules and procedures?
The brief
Working in an agile and more open way is a fundamental element of today’s modern workplace. But how do you shift traditional behaviours and working patterns in an industry typically driven by following rules and procedures?
The challenges
This was the question posed to The Art of Work before an major office move requiring the whole workforce to shift and work differently in the new workplace. Julie Blunt our Creative Director tells us more “After many years of working at the same desk, in the same way, staff at The Rail Services and Standards Board (RSSB) were moving to an agile office environment featuring hot desking, breakout project areas and digital hot spots. Innovative and fresh they wanted our support to ensure not just a physical move but a change in culture within RSSB.”
The solutions
Together we developed a range of options including both development and communication activities. As recognised thought leaders on how the physical workplace environment impacts on behaviours and levels of engagement, our blended ‘Smart Move’ programme included the key elements that we believed were required a successful transition. Working in partnership with RSSB we developed smart move working protocols together with digital nudges through our micro learning platform. Bitesize skills shots were designed and delivered to both managers and their teams to encourage new thinking and behaviours head of the move. Together with an agile management toolkit we provided further resources for managers to use and refer to on an on-going basis, with a range of tools and techniques to engage and develop others in a flexible and collaborative work environment.
The results
Julie continues “we received some great feedback from both the programme team and their managers. The move to the new building happened smoothly and the Smart Move programme created a sense of excitement and gave staff confidence in their ability to work in a different way, along with a toolkit of ideas to support them. Introducing new digital learning techniques gave RSSB a real sense of the future and encouraged them to think and act differently. ”
