Developing potential in consulting services

How do you ensure you develop an authentic leadership culture?

Developing potential in consulting services

The brief

How do you gain deep personal insight into what leadership means and how best to practise it?

When a leading professional services firm asked us to help develop a new offering for their experienced managers within their consulting practice, we were happy to help. Innovative and surprising, we had an immediate impact creating positive waves in the organisation, and the project has become a showcase for our more immersive learning activities. While the firm already had a good management fundamentals programme, they lacked something to help more experienced managers who needed more stretch and challenge. They wanted something fresh and sophisticated to appeal to their demanding and bright leaders.

The challenges

While the firm already had a good management fundamentals programme, they lacked something to help more experienced managers who needed more stretch and challenge. They wanted something fresh and sophisticated to appeal to their demanding and bright leaders. We needed to fully understand the culture and learning priorities of the organisation, so we undertook a detailed discovery phase, talking to managers and stakeholders in the organisation to really dig beneath the surface before we could design a bespoke programme addressing their specific leadership concerns.

The solutions

Consequently, we developed a two-day immersive leadership development programme focussed on personal and team leadership, supported by 1:1 coaching and virtual learning delivered using our innovative digital learning platform. With strengths at its heart, we created an unforgettable learning environment led by a highly-skilled delivery team, including our rehearsal facilitators bringing to life real challenges faced by the learners. With challenging spiral exercises and live simulation, the programme put the learners through their paces in an engaging and impactful way.

The results

Julie Blunt our Creative Director, who led the design on this programme, comments: "With outstanding feedback and real examples of a return on the investment made in the managers who have attended to date, the proven programme is now in its third year and is more popular than ever."

As lead practitioner, for me, this has been an extraordinary programme now into its third year. The clue is in the title! What does it mean to develop. learn and grow; What does leadership mean and look like; how can you pinpoint your area of best potential and change how you tap into it? The consultants who attend this 2 day programme are amazed at the depth of the conversations and the level of personal insights gained. The course centres around strengths-based leading, emotional intelligence and effective leadership conversations. I thoroughly enjoy running this course as delegates really get a chance to step out of themselves, reflect and focus on what really matters to them. The course is followed by a coaching conversation to help support delegates with their personal learning and development. This course helps strip away the myths about what kind of leader delegates think they ought to be and moves them towards the kind of leader they authentically could be.

Using rehearsal practitioners as part of this programme has been a key to unlocking the nuances of complex conversations. It allows participants to reflect on their own strengths, behaviours and leadership style, and so recognise how these can affect others, helping to expand emotional intelligence and allow for a more flexible and agile approach.

"We recently developed a new leadership programme in conjunction with the Art of Work and I was very impressed with the leadership expertise, innovative ideas and client service provided. The Art of Work’s collaborative approach allowed us to incorporate multiple stakeholder views to develop a unique programme for experienced managers, which has been a great success. In addition, their wide network of facilitators and learning providers meant we could access leadership experts and create tailored learning solutions. I can highly recommend The Art of Work team."
